Back in High School, when I worked at an Esso/Exxon service/gas station, one of the truly amazing engines of the time was the Cadillac Eldorado 500 cubic inch/8.2 liter monster engine which initially in 1970 had 400 horsepower but then due to the Federal Government EPA, by 1976 it was down to 230 horsepower due to the horrendous pollution standards which really ruined American engines and gave American cars a bad reputation.

  To rob an engine of almost half its power , it must have had some serious crap attached to it !!..... 230 hp equates to 'only' 28 horsepower per liter !... That's around the 1930's outputs .
 Those HS Chevette engines that I showed you could ( with the right tweaks ) hit around 220hp....from 'only' 2.3 ltrs !

Do you see those small hoses that are on the top of the engine? They were what was used for pollution prevention because in those days there were no electronics that could be used and those hoses were nightmares.

 It looks like they were trying use what was an early form of 'EGR' ( Exhaust gas recirculation) , which in effect is **77** the engine to 'eat' a percentage of its own exhaust gases ! That and other limitations is what drags the power output down so much . That sort of 'pollution control' ( hah! ) would most likely cause reliability issues too....
