(Giving that last simile a wide berth, pun not intended...)

If you haven't already tried this, give it a shot...
In Settings on the iPod Touch, turn off wifi. Then reboot the iPod, then go back to Settings and turn wifi back on. After that, depending on the configuration of your network, your iPod may automatically choose the network, or you may be able to choose it from the list, or you may have to choose "Other" and type the network name and (optionally) password.

Good luck!

I really think that whoever is responsible for the changes to the photo library in the iOS 8 update must have been smoking crack!
I can't see all of my photos in one section now. They are divided in groups like recently added or they have names of places like New Hampshire or New York. It's just totally fucked!...

I'm not downloading any changes to any iOS 8 update until I know for sure that it is safe.

I can't blame you at all! But there's some hope on the horizon:

The percentage of files on my computer that exist without their original filenames gets larger with every passing year as more folks use iOS devices instead of regular PCs. It's sad.  ???

There are more than a few interesting results when one types "ghost of steve jobs" into google images.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD The IOS 8 update.
I downloaded the iOS 8 update last night and I should have known better.
Remember the scene in Animal House where the chubby guy comes back home and discovers his car that he lent to the other guys is totaled. One of the guys that wrecked the car comes up and tries to console him and says-"Face it.You fucked up.You trusted us.You shouldn't have done that!"
I'm feeling the exact way the chubby guy was feeling at that moment after I downloaded the IOS update.
I had over 43,000 pictures and they are all gone. The videos that I took are gone. All my apps are there.I try to save a picture from the net and it does not save it.I took a picture with my camera and it does not show up in my picture library.
I have been posting from an old iPod for the last month or so.I'll post about that tomorrow.
I synched my iPod 2 weeks ago. So,I hope I can still synch it from that date or I've lost all my pictures.
Is Apple hiring Cheech and Chong to work on IOS and any of their other products?
Don't they test this stuff before they release it?
I sincerely hope that Apple headquarters is infested with giant mutant sewer rats!
Bastards!
Anyone else experience this after downloading the update?

I just checked two apps that I have where I stored pictures and thank god they are still there. One app is a spy cam that I took pictures of chicks on the street.I had around 250 pics and they are still there. The other app is a picture search app.I have around 6 or 7 hundred pictures that I've searched on there over the past year or so and they are all there.I'm just glad I never erased them in that app because they would be truly gone now.
One of the top money making companies in the world and I don't even want to swear or post some smartass comment right now. These guys can't get anything right ever since Steve Jobs passed away.I'm just so disappointed!

Very, very sorry to hear of your misfortune tdotter, as I am when any of us suffers some data loss. I won't make any apologies for Apple, since I'm not on their payroll, nor do I know enough about iOS-based products to fully understand how what happened to you could have happened, or whether it could be due to a bug in the upgrade or have some other cause.

If you'll excuse my ignorance, maybe you could just explain to me how content (user data like photos) is normally backed up on an iOS-based device? I know iOS-based products don't have USB ports or accept SD cards... thus, is ALL user data only able to be backed-up on a cloud-based storage account and/or by syncing the device with a computer so it's backed-up on that machine's hard drive? If that's the case, which of those two methods have you been using to backup your data, or did you do both? In either case, how would upgrading the OS on the device itself have affected (erased) your data from a cloud-based or at-home-on-a-PC backup?

Again, I'm an iOS ignoramus, so please pardon me if these are stupid questions or I'm lacking some fundamental understanding re: iOS data backups. Thanks.

My photo library is restoring all of my pictures in my library. It is up to 33,000 pictures now.My videos are back as well. When I wrote the above post,it was at least 5 hours after I had downloaded the iOS 8 update. There was no restoring going on.It just said "no pictures in library".The picture that I took last night is now in my library. It was not there last night.I've been posting on here for the past month on an older Touch.I've been having a problem where I am on the web and after a few minutes I get the message "safari had to reload webpage."I googled this and it turns out that very many apple users have this problem. It seems that this showed up after one of the earlier iOS 8 updates.I don't know if I still have this problem because I have been surfing the web on this older Touch that has an earlier version of safari.I read the overview for the latest update and there was no mention of a bug fix for this specific problem I've been having with Safari.
Palomine,I synched my iPod touch to my laptop for the first time in well over a year.I'm not sure if everything I have on the iPod is on my laptop because I had to leave it on when I was synching it overnight.Usually the more apps you have then it will usually take a long time to synch especially apps that are video games.
I've never enabled ICloud because I don't trust it and I've read in many places that synching your material on there takes alot longer than doing it on a desktop.I connect my Touch to my laptop with a USB cable. If you ever lose everything on an iPod for whatever reason, you have the option of synching the iPod to the date that you last synched it.Therefore,if you synch it on a regular basis then you won't lose hardly any material.
Here's a screenshot of my library restoring. It's up to almost 34,000 pictures.

Yeah, Apple created a "new" app called Photos that's basically the same across the IOS and MacOS platforms, which has better organizational and retouching tools than the Camera and iPhoto apps. It allows you to have one repository of photos and share it across all Apple devices, and it also allows you a finer degree of control over which photos get shared with which device(s), iCloud storage, etc.

Apparently, the upgrade process moved your photos into the Photos app from other apps, but you should have been prompted to set Photos' sharing preferences at startup after installing the upgrade, which would have prevented you from going into shock.

Thank you both for the explanations.

I never used/always hated iPhoto and have probably lost/spent dozens of hours of my life helping friends/computer newbies find/fix issues with their iPhoto image databases like missing pix, dupe pix, etc... So, I'm not sorry to see it go, but the new Photo app probably is just as bad as iPhoto was (IMO, knowing Apple) yet perhaps even more convoluted under the hood since it's using the cloud to sync the image database across different devices and (per gonZo) even with different sharing permissions. To which I can only say: oy vey!  :o ::) Call me a Luddite if you must, but for the past 25 years every modern OS has already contained the necessary tools to create/organize image archives: filenames and folder structures. With those, why a person would really need to have a secondary (some might say redundant) layer of complification by using a database also, let alone one with proxy images, dupes of full-rez data (like iTunes, iPhoto does that unless you disable it, so you basically need twice the disk space you think you do) and recently, remote storage of data (syncing, mirroring across devices, backup to cloud) is beyond me. To say nothing of the additional security concerns that all of this raises: more copies of your data, in more places, some of which aren't even on hardware you own.  :o ::) I'm not suggesting we all go back to cave paintings, but cripes, what's wrong with keeping image files on your own media in your own house? ESPECIALLY (if you're a **29** for example) if you're gonna save pictures of yourself with your boyfriend's DNA all over your face?

tdotter, I ***always*** (personally) think local sync (to your own backup drive/PC) is far better than 'on the cloud' to some disk on some server in some server farm in another state: on a machine you neither own nor control. NOT because of security issues (I'm not ultra paranoid about getting my stuff hacked, it's not like I even HAVE any photos of myself that are that incriminating) but just for common sense reasons: why go over the 'net to backup/restore when you can do it over a USB (or Firewire, or eSata) cable in the comfort and privacy of your own home, even w/o an active net connection?

Regardless, I'm very glad your data is reappearing as Photo (and whatever cloud procedures Apple chose) begins to restore the images after your upgrade. :)

I just wish they would leave items that don't need improving alone. You want to add new features, fine.Stop messing around with things that are perfectly fine the way they are. They almost always end up screwing it up and making it worse.See Google Maps as an example. ???
I got everything back now and it has stopped restoring.

Glad you've got everything back tdotter! :D

Wishing that software upgrades only added features/fixed bugs and never deleted features/created new bugs is like wishing for fishes in the Sahara. Would that it were so, but sadly... I just the other day spent time helping a pal with a brand-spanking-new Mac Mini (which comes with iMovie 10.something) try to install iMovie 6 (from around 2006 I think) since he believes that that version (6) was the last time Apple made a decent iMovie (and a brief skim of google shows there are quite a few folks who agree with him). As it turns out, the version of OSX he's using is just a bit too new to run iMovie 6... it can run on some 10.X Macs, but just not the very latest/most recent versions. :( for my pal.

Being an infrequent user of iMovie (twice a year max) I was still using iMovie 3 (! :D) til I just upgraded my old Macbook Pro to iMovie 6.

I haven't yet gotten over being irked at the lack of a USB port or SD card slot on iOS devices, though I see that it is now possible to download a third-party app that gives an iPad/iPhone something akin to a regular file manager, which is a relief to a traditionalist like me, since Apple saw fit to avoid including one by default in iOS.

I know folks'll think I'm crazy, but a while back, a friend who has (literally) several iPads (of various versions and sizes) offered me one from among those he doesn't use, and I declined, not because it was too extravagant a gift but honestly just because I just didn't see myself using it that much. Even for casual surfing/email, I'd just prefer a keyboard and mouse (which proves I'm a Luddite yet again). ;)

It's called "a means of justifying our market cap". They have to show people that they're busy doing something, even if that "something" is fucking up things that already work perfectly fine.

So, yeah, fuck Apple, and fuck the greedy-ass ghost of Steve Jobs too.

That is why the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is winning. SD card slot, USB port, the whole shebang.
