BUMP!!!!

Movie Classic

Overrated: Gone With the Wind

The movie can't decide what it wants to be. The first half is truly epic, building up to a great scene. But the second half ruins everything, turning it into a dull, melodramatic soap opera. Try watching just the second half sometime. Does it look like one of the greatest movies ever?

Underrated: Jaws

Sure, everyone agrees it's a great movie. But why doesn't it get more respect from the movie mavens? I have some ideas.

1. It's got no big name stars. No Bogart. No Hepburn. No Pacino. No one who can get you to go see their movie just by knowing they're in it. Sure, the three leads are all fine actors, but none of them can make a movie great on their own.
2. It doesn't fit into any of the usual genres. The weenies over at the American Film Institute had another one of their Use Up TV Time specials recently, looking at their 10 Best movies in 10 genres. Their choice for genres? Romantic Comedy, Western, Fantasy, Animated, Mystery, Sports, Sci-Fi, Gangster, Courtroom Drama, and Epic. Where's the horror/thriller/monster/scary movies? Of course they didn't have that category. Hollywood doesn't really know what to do with Horror. Witness the lame-ass montage from the 2010 Oscars. At least that led off with a scene from Jaws- but where the hell is Vincent Price? Anyway, Jaws 'suffers' from not really fitting into a single genre. It has a monster, but it's not really a monster movie because there's no mass destruction. It has elements of what we know call a Slasher flick, but it's not entirely one - the villain ain't human.
3. It's from the 70s. Too soon to be from the 'beloved' Golden Age of Hollywood, and too old for today's generation of 'if it happened before I was born, it doesn't exist'.

It's a shame, since Jaws did everything right. Just compare it to both the novel and the many, many ripoffs. It also set a box-office record on its opening weekend (I mention this since today, a movie's quality is determined solely by the opening weekend take), and when you adjust for inflation, it's #7 on the all-time box-office list (Avaturd is #14...wonder where it would be if you weren't paying extra $$$ for the 3D). And don't forget - it created the Summer Blockbuster. Come to think of it, maybe that's why it doesn't get any respect...

Wow, rtpoe, talk about bumping a thread. This game sounds fun

Overrated: Family Guy

I used to love this show. I wouldn't miss it. Then Seth MacFarlane's head got huge and decided to create American Dad and The Cleveland Show. Each show is almost exactly the same. It has diluted the great gags that Family Guy owned. I'm also a HUGE Simpsons fan and never understood Seth's hatred of it. Without The Simpsons, he probably doesn't exist. I also think that his jokes are borderline offensive now. Every other joke is about some type of abuse. And how many star wars references can I see in 1 season

Underrated: South Park

Matt and Trey's show used to revolve around nothing but human excretion and Kenny dying. Though they still haven't forgotten there roots, over the last 7-8 years, the show has stayed fresh by becoming more of a social commentary. The **24** episode and the medicinal marijuana shows were hysterical! Some of the commentary is also very subtle. I miss the references sometimes and enjoy watching reruns to find them.

And about Gone With The Wind. If my mother found out about that, she would reassemble her ashes, hunt you down, kill you, bring you back to life just to kill you again :P I do agree with you about that. I think it's also about how Clark Gable uttered the word "damn" in an era where cursing was taboo.

Jaws continues to be the ONLY movie that scared the living hell out of me. I've seen most of the so called scary movies and the genre just doesn't do it for me. I didn't go in the water for months after that.

Over-rated The Wizard of Oz
I hate this movie
I completely disagree. I still am in wonderment at the special effects that this film used -- in 1939. Think about it.

What makes it even more awesome: it created the summer blockbuster -- by accident. Remember that the film was over-budget and way late (because of all the problems with getting the mechanical shark to work, for example) so it was supposed to have been released much earlier. What now looks like brilliant planning, was all due to serendipity :)

You ain't kidding, mastert. But hey, reading some BEA Forum history is pretty illuminating every now and again, and I can definitely see why HeavyMetal1980 wasn't a fan-favorite around here and why he eventually got himself banned. I know, I know, we're not supposed to mention "The Banned", but damn, when a thread like this hits the top of the forum again, it's gonna happen, especially given who was in this thread and who is here again now (you know who you are). Of course, given that this is such an ancient thread, I was going to chide ruefully this thread's necromancer, but Rtpoe always gets a pass in my book on this kind of stuff--he's no dummy. After all, he's a living planet, kind of like "Ego", from Thor, but minus the ego. ;D

Now, now, now, don't go hating too much on Family Guy. Sure, they've diluted their content a bit, considering they're on their second life after their historic cancellation and rebirth. Nonetheless, they are still riding a wave of viewership on Sundays that keeps on truckin', and of course Adult Swim on Cartoon Network still caters to their core fanbase every weekday at 11:00 PM, so the demographics are spot on for FOX for the forseeable future.

Addressing the "Star Wars" kick, you have to know that Family Guy got the license by George Lucas to parody the "Star Wars" films, with two 1-hour shows produced so far parodying Episodes 4 & 5 (A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back), with Episode 6 (Return of the Jedi) to come. Being as how they have this license to make these semi-feature-length parodies, and having paid the money for it already, anything else they do with that license is gravy, and so you see gobs of "Star Wars" references inculcated into the general series continuity.

Anyway, didn't they recently do a parody of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" castmembers with the full voice cast from TNG participating in their respective voiceovers?

Overrated: Saying big budget Hollywood blockbusters are big, dumb, loud and not worthy of any praise. And that indie/low budget movies are for the more intellectual crowd looking for a thought provoking and moving piece of fiction.

Underrated: Having the correct set of expectations before sitting down and/or paying $7.50 for a movie and not bitching about it when, lo and behold, it isn't what you expected - when it really is.

Avatar.

As far as Family Guy is concerned, I had the same thoughts when American Dad came out. But now the show is finally coming into its own, mainly because I read/heard that Seth isn't the driving creative force behind it any more - he basically turned it over to two of his staffers. Whether that is true or not I believe the show has come into its own and has a whole different flavor then FG (which lately, I think has become more and more unsavory) So I like both shows for different reasons and I don't feel like I'm watching a FG remix anymore when I'm watching AD. The Cleveland Show is not quite there yet, but I'm willing to give it a chance. As far as him getting the big head, well I mean, whatever - I think he's the highest paid tv producer and his show was canceled twice before it got to where it is now. So, yeah. I prefer seeing the shows with him being rich and confident then being broke and canceled.

Well, you really didn't have to mention him or any one else who has been banned from here, if there was no overriding need to do so.

IMO, it's much more polite to find and revive an old thread on a topic, instead of creating a new one. If we already have a lot of knowledge accumulated in one thread, why not keep it going with new (relevant) material? Especially considering how often the "search" function doesn't work around here, it's much more courteous to do so. Much better than having to track down ten threads devoted to the same model, which often devolves into:

"Look who I found!"
"Dude, we've talked about her before, here and here and here."
"Really?" "Yeah, you n00b."
"Who you callin' a n00b?!"
FIGHT!

Therefore, I personally do not chide anyone for reviving an old thread; rather, s/he has my gratitude.

As you were.
