Translation of "Kateikyoushi, bakunyuu kari"

Hello there. Haven't said much here in a while. In fact, I haven't even lurked much, being on vacation and all...

But I'm back, and after all this time benefitting from your hard work, I thought it time to start pulling my own weight around here!

So, I thought, what better way to do that for a Japanese inclined person such as myself than by offering a translation of one of my favourite big bust mangas. Which is "Kateikyoushi, bakunyuu kari", which I got from Max Bigfoot's Manga Mix in the bearchive's member area in the brief period I was a member (before running out of funds).

Now to start with the disclaimer. I'm not a professional translator, and at best a beginner at Japanese. One of the reason I chose this particular manga is because it's relatively simple to translate. But still, some of the translations will be downright wrong. But that's not the point. The point, I would think, is that all the good fellows here who don't read Japanese but wish they could can at least follow the story of this manga. And my translations are good enough (I hope

) to make that possible.

I've tried to steer clear of Japanese-isms in the translations, but they'll show up once every while anyway. One in particular I've chosen to keep is the word "sensei" as it's used quite often, and I don't have any good way to translate it that I like myself. So it stays.

So far I've got several pages done. The whole thing is a whopping 171 pages (counting covers and such) long, so it'll take me a while.

Since I don't have any place to host this, I'll begin by posting it here. Since I don't want to break the 1-1-1-1 rule, that will take long, very long. Half a year, for those who can't do the math themselves, assuming I don't miss any days. I have decided to skip the front covers, toc, etc. just so we won't waste more than a week on them. I'll also need to compress the pictures more than the originals were, since those were above the board size limit for attachments.

Of course, if anyone knows a place that can host around 40 or 50MB and won't immediately collapse under the bandwidth strain of a link placed here, and above all else, is free and allows adult content, I'll be more than happy to hear it. It means I can be faster (assuming I can work faster too

) and can use better quality.

If you see any obvious mistakes I made in the translations, English grammar, or any other nits you might, don't be afraid to tell me. Positive feedback is welcomed also, of course!

Something I forgot to mention because it's obvious to me, but I just realized it might not be to everyone:
I don't flip the pages, so they should be read in the original Japanese order, that means right-to-left. You start with the top-right image, then go left. Exactly mirrored as how you'd read a normal English comic.

The fact that the Japanese write right-to-left and vertically is also the reason the text fits so horribly in most balloons - they're ment to accomodate vertical text, not the horizontal text I'm putting in there. Many official manga translators (such as Viz Comics) change the size and shape of text balloons whenever it doesn't affect the rest of the image too much to lessen this effect.

Unfortunately, yes. The originals are about 200KB each, so I already have to compress them more to get them below the 150KB size limit for board attachments. Compressing them to below 100KB would mean I would have to use even higher compression ratios or reduce the size, and neither would benefit quality, let alone legibility of the text.

EDIT: I've just tried compressing the first one to under 100KB using PSP8, and trust me, considering the result, you don't want me doing that.

You might put up a pre-compressed (200K) file somewhere and let some folks have a go at finding a compression method suitable for 100K posts. I find it hard to imagine that line art like that COULDN'T be compressed to under 100K and still look pretty good. Have you tried saving as GIF instead of JPEG? That might work better for that kind of content. Just a suggestion.

Unfortunately that is the case. Neither GIF nor PNG can get the file size under 200KB, even when I reduce the colour count to 16 (which, as you can imagine, doesn't do the quality much good either). It's simply a matter of dimensions. The image is 836*1200, pretty big, after all. One of the reasons GIF and PNG don't work too well might also be because the originals I have were JPGs, so there's already artefacting in those, and jpeg artefacting isn't good for algorithms such as LZW (GIF). The dithered grey areas probably don't do it any good either.

If anyone can find a way to further compress the image attached above without the quality degrading too much, feel free to let me know.

Okay, here's my plan. The e-mail service gmx.net may no longer allow subscriptiong outside of Germany and nowadays requires a valid home address, so it's no longer possible to get a new e-mail address unless you live in Germany, this restriction doesn't hold on e-mail addresses requested previously. And luck have it I have one of those.

What does this have to do with the translation? Simple, a new feature of GMX is an online harddrive, called MediaCenter, which gives you 1GB of online storage. And you can share the contents of the mediacenter with other people.

Now I have no clue what kind of bandwidth they allow, or how they look upon adult content, but I figure the worst that can happen is they close my account, and I wasn't using it anyway.

The site is in German, but I think you'll figure it out. Use Babelfish if you have to. One piece of advice: to view the files full-size, don't click the thumbnail. Instead, select the file, then choose "Datei/öffnen". Or choose "Datei/Download" to download the files to your computer.

I've uploaded all the cover and toc pages (untranslated), as well as the first five translated pages. Lets first see if this works before I put any more up.

How about this? Imageready claimed it was 97k. It's 20% smaller, 16 colors, 100% dither, 50% web safe colors.

If I were you, I'd use a bolder font. A light-weight font is harder to read at smaller sizes. Go to http://www.blambot.com to get 100% legal free comic fonts. I'd suggest "Digital Strip" or "Web Letterer" in the free dialog section.

Palomine, the biggest problem in reducing the size of the comic is to make the dialog readable. Sometimes it isn't possible to make a comic any smaller... although this wasn't the case here.
