They did a skit about gay sci-fi on Saturday Night Live last Saturday. I bet I know which show they were making fun of!!! The Egyptian motif gave it away!!!

Queer eye for the space guys!!!

Please, MW - don't compare galactica to Firefly - I'd rather have my family be exposed to some pure chlorine and die a slow painful death, because quite frankly, and my hatred of the putrid pit of mediocreness that is Firefly, actually my hate is wasted on that aborted fetus...

Suffice to say Dick - and good to see you here, although obviously sad that the cuntitude of the forums made Jane leav- , I sincerely say that everyone should watch this show - Enterpise getting cancelled wasn't a suprise. The fact it lasted so fucking long is.

Galactica is quite possibly... everything Trek wants to be but never could be.

If you missed it, download it. God has a plan for all of us, which is for you to watch this show and find out what your role is.

I initially hated the cylons as humans idea - now i love it. This is without question one of the best shows, ever. As I said, it proves that sci-fi is just a genre. Not to mention that when you get to the end of the season (a scant 13 episodes minus miniseries) fucking hell you'll shed a tear.

I do agree that we should not compare the new Galactica with Firefly. In fact I think the only thing it should be compared to is the original Battlestar Galactic. Unfortunately I feel the new one falls very short. I will tell you all why.

First, the original Battlestar was created to tap into the frenzy surrounding Star Wars (1977) - the scope of the production and the special-effects budget was unprecedented. The show set the record up to that time and beat the previous record holder which was... Star Trek! This recent remake of the original has a tiny fraction of that budget and it shows.

Second, the original had, for the time, a diverse cast. There were old, young, black, white, male, female, you get the idea. The stories mixed these groups together and this made for a very humanist feel. Today we would say it is campy. At the time it was inclusive and hopeful. The modern version is dark, aggressive, and bleak. The cast is limited in depth and the stories are predictable and uninspired.

Last, the original Battlestar had stories that were very much like Star Trek. There was an aspect of science fiction in each one, however the story could have been set anywhere and it would have worked. That, in my mind is good science fiction. The new Battlestar can be called military fantasy. The focus is the “war”, and the removal of this aspect would effectively gut most of the episodes.

It appears to be inspired by and copied from the Sci-Fi channel’s run of Stargate. I get the feeling that the spin-off of Stargate Atlantis has emboldened the creators to attempt Battlestar. In a way it is a derivative copy of a remake from a 25 year old TV series. The fan base does appear to support these military action based shows and has moved away from the Star Trek style series.

Cerebral thoughtful true science fiction series are dying off and are being replaced by blunt shoot-them-up JAG in space shows. This is too bad. Star Trek had far better writing but the center has moved away from it the shows are reacting to that shift. Let us see if Battlestar makes it past 100 episodes like Enterprise and gets their budget slashed in the fourth season.

I don't think it's the kind of show that's meant to go past 100 episodes. I think they probably have their story and plotlines planned out for so many episodes and that'll be it, as evidenced by the fact that there are only 13 episodes to the first season.

Having a ton of episodes does not necessarily make a good series anyways... look at what happened to shows like Earth: Final Conflict and Sliders. By the end of both, there was barely anything left that made them recognizable as what was originally intended, and the acting went waaaay downhill.

Ah, I never said that "a ton of episodes" made for a good series. I was trying to show that Enterprise did continue for almost 10 times the number of episodes as Battlestar Galactica (BG2004) has so far and with the budget cut in the forth season. Let us see if BG2004 could do that.

Also - 13 episodes in the first season is more from it having a mid-season start, production and legal problems and little to do with any farsighted creativity on the part of the writers.

My reaction is to the post title of BG2004 being "The Best Sci-Fi Show EVER!" and was attempting to establish some criteria by which to measure it.

If, as you say, BG2004 is not "meant to go past 100 episodes" then what is it meant to do? To try and compare Sci-Fi shows from different decades, with different focus, and different runs is akin to comparing athletes or movies from an equal span of time - the last 25 years. It is just too much of a mix to say that one is "The BEST".

Yes, I know it is done for movies and athletes but it is always with some sort of defining criteria. If one adjusts the criteria a tiny bit, suddenly there is a new "BEST" whatever.

I am sure that under some very specific criteria BG2004 is "The BEST". I just feel that by more common industry standards there have been many other and "BETTER" Sci-Fi shows. Right now, there is very little competition so BG2004 looks better than I think it actually is.

As far as Earth: Final Conflict goes - I never saw a single episode so I will not comment. But it does show that many episodes does not equal a "good" series. Sliders is not at the same episode count and had other more drastic setbacks to the series (3/4 of the original cast left!) that had nothing to do with the show. The fact that both series were drastically different to how they started, in their particular cases, was more from external pressures and nothing to do with the series' directions or creator's intent.

However, just having these shows produced may have been a success in the eyes of their teams.

You said it would never make it past 100 episodes, as if that's some sort of benchmark.

Battlestar Galactica has also only just finished one season. How can you compare a series that's already run for several seasons and got cancelled because it sucked from day one, to a show that just started, and has already shown so much promise?

And even in 13 episodes, they still managed to put together an absolutely amazing season that leaves one wanting more. Enterprise never did that for me. I don't think I even watched a full season of that show.

I imagine they probably have a season or three planned out and then it'll end, instead of going on and on and becoming a dead horse that the producers keep finding a new way to beat.

It's not the fault of the cast leaving that the show sucked.  It's the fact that the producers kept making the show even though the cast of main characters kept leaving.

Really, you have to appreciate the nature of the thread - which is not to establish the best sci-fi series of all time, but rather to simply appreciate a good sci-fi drama in days when utter pap like Firefly, Andromeda etc. gets made.

No one is trying to say that BSG is the same type of well I have to use quotes because I don't really agree but "groundbreaking" show the original was. However, it's in it's own way a landmark - oh sure, it's not exactly breaking any incredible special effect boundaries, it's not going to win oscars for the acting, hell it's not even the most original thing ever - but if you're sitting there thinking that matters. You've lost the point.

Look at films like the Matrix or Star Wars: A New Hope - no new ideas, no particularly good acting or plot etc. etc. but the combination of factors made them. So I say it is with the new BSG. Disagree, that's not a concern of mine... but you're wrong.

No, I said nothing about the possible run of the show. I want to see IF it will go that long. Benchmark or not, most shows that make it that far celebrate the 100 mark.

That is OK, at least you saw a few other shows.

I doubt they have that much foresight. They are more likely to respond pressures of the moment and adjust the show to fit.

I do not blame the cast, or producers, writers, etc. individually. Any show is an amalgam of many talents. The effort to get any show on the air is considerable and for every one that makes it there are many more that never do.

BG2004 is good for even making it this far.

Sweet mother of pearl. What kind of wet behind the ears newbie dweeb are you, IceOuch?

Battlebore Milktoast ran for 124 inane episodes from 1978 to 1980. Probably that was way before you were even conceived. Didn't you catch the marathon of old episodes on the SciFi channel? The show was so dated and hokey it was a laugh riot.

Lest we not forget the long slow paced miniseries of Battlebore in 2003. A royal snoozer that was!!! You must have been old enough by then for your parents to let you stay up to watch that one.

That sounds an awful lot like a possible run of the show. Again, I ask, who says it's meant to go past 100 episodes?

It doesn't seem like that kind of show. They seem to have a very definate plan of action and direction. Just because you don't know what's going to happen next doesn't mean the writers don't.

I was born in 1979, so no, I wouldn't have seen the original when it first ran, or at least, if I ever did, there is no way I could have remembered it.

I've watched the original series, and it's got nothing on the new one.

I agree, I love the show...never miss it.
Those who like it should write to the scifi-channel website and say so.
You can actually watch the first episode uncut...cool site:

Kudos to Salem for digging up an old thread.

There's no recalibrating the phase neutron regulator of the quantum coffee cup or repolarising the photonic toliets antimatter differential.

I couldn't agree more with Prophet.  Though I grew up watching Star Trek shows & movies, BSG is for those of us whom wish to grow up a little more, and take it to the next level.

There's violence of almost every level, personal & combat.  Watching a Cylon woman's spine light up whilst in coitus was pretty hot.
Watching Galactica fall out of the sky, launch Vipers, and jump out, to rescue a city from Cylon occupation was beyond awesome and to use Kevin Smith's words at Comic Con 2005(?): "It was so dope, I came."   :o
Adama's final flight, and Galactica's flight into the sun was a tear jerker for years.

However, I couldn't quite understand why Ron Moore to have one of his fav' songs "All Along the Watchtower" used as some spiritual vibe.

Sorry, Salem, but I tried to watch "Dr. Who", but the pilot was garbage cans eating people?  Puhlease!  lol  jk
