Alexis Love: The War Against False Assumptions
When Joyce Gibson first exploded upon the glamour scene at age 18 in 1969, silicone (for all its publicity) was still a relative novelty. Like three of the era’s other voluptuous pin-up legends – June Wilkinson, Cynthia Myers, and Michelle Angelo – her bountiful bosom was seen as a wonder of nature. Together with her smoldering, exotic brunette beauty and an erotic aura matched by few models in history, her extraordinary figure helped make Joyce one of America’s most widely-published nude models during the next few years.
But the glamour world into which Joyce re-entered in 1993 under the new, blonde identity of Alexis Love was an utterly transformed landscape. Where a quarter-century earlier only a few glamour stars were known to be augmented, in 1993 Alexis was one of the very few all-natural models to appear in Score and other big-bust magazines. And whereas few models could rival her mammary endowments during her “first life” as a pin-up star, that is no longer the case in a time with the gargantuan-gazongaed ‘90s likes of Tiffany Towers and Crystal Storm.
(When I suggested in good humor that Joyce looked small compared to these women, she was quick to retort, “Actually, I don’t think that’s true. Even though Tiffany Towers’ are fake, her bust size is about the same as mine”)
Indeed, these dual facts were the reasons she got back into the modeling business after more than a dozen years in private life. When I first interviewed her in 1995, Joyce told me about her boyfriend “teasing me about how many other women were in these magazines with breasts as big, or bigger, than mine. We noticed all the 20-year-olds with enormous breast implants, and here I was with natural-shaped breasts.” And so she returned to nude modeling under a new identity “to make a statement that women, even at a certain age, can still look great and without breast implants.”
Our first article on Joyce produced an enthusiastic response from her many fans, but also generated some questions. Come on, some smirked, you don’t actually believe her breasts are real, do you? One fan even sent me side-by-side photocopies of shots comparing the Joyce of 1969-71 – spectacularly endowed, although not enormous by today’s standards – with a ‘90s Alexis photo in which her breasts seemed considerably more imposing. I could only reply that she seemed totally sincere and honest, but inwardly I confess that I had my doubts. The passing years and a few extra pounds (the young Joyce was startlingly slender-waisted) could account for some increase in breast size, but as for the rest … who knows? I shrugged it off without much further thought as one of life’s little mysteries that would never be convincingly resolved.
