So the All-Star game has come and gone. Pretty exciting in spots. Ichiro's inside the park HR; the NL scoring two runs and leaving the bases loaded with two out in the bottom of the ninth... Not bad.

But the director at FOX needs to be smacked around.

First, how come they never said who the umpires were? Sure, they mentioned Bruce Froemming was behind the plate, but that was so they could comment on his strike zone for the most part. Oh, and they mentioned in passing that he was in his 37th year as a Major League umpire, and only one other umpire had done more games than he has. Heck, even during a measly Game Of The Week they put up a graphic naming the umpires.

The most egregious error came in the bottom of the first. The Mets' Jose Reyes lead off with a single. He's leading the majors in stolen bases with 46, giving him a reasonable shot at breaking 100 for the year. Manager Tony LaRussa said he was going to let Reyes run on his own initiative. So everyone watching, at home and in the park, was expecting him to try and steal second. Except for FOX. They were so involved with their Barry Bonds Love Fest (he was batting second) that the first indication the TV audience got that Reyes was actually off and running was when catcher Ivan Rodriguez stood up to throw to second.

Idiots.

Heh. I grew up collecting baseball cards when stolen bases were at 70+ so I can relate here. They're appreciated as much as when people led the league hitting fewer than 40 homers.

It's just a different world. My most egregious error is continuing to let Tim McCarver work.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I wish they'd lock the obnoxious cheating jerk up, and throw him out of baseball, of course.

And it's NOT racism, because I cheered on Henry Aaron, and it's sad he'll lose the record to this clown.

It's also sad that a guy who probably COULD have broken the record even if he stayed clean chose the easy route and cheated.

Sorry SF fans, if this guy is your hero, you have low standards.

That's about right. No one outside San Francisco cares about Bonds*. Whether he's cheated or not, he is still an obnoxious jerk.

It was also pretty much a done deal when the season began; the only things that remain interesting about it are the where, when, and what pitchers give them up.

You have to love the way the races are shaping up. Even the Yankees seem to be getting their act together as Boston looks to be coasting... With luck, everything will go down to the last week of the season.

Today was almost a perfect day in baseball. Phils won (despite Utley on the DL), Braves lost (though Julioooooo went 2-4 with a double and 3 rbi) Mets lost, BoSox won, Skankees lost. And yes, Bonds hit one.

I tend to think he's not so bad because while he's the main target of the steroid era, he's just one man. Canseco and Caminiti admitted they took steroids when they played, others were caught, but most won't be. But I tend to think that it's all relative, and it works for pitchers as well as hitters. But when did you hear of a pitcher dosing? The record is probably 95% incomplete, so while I realize Bonds may not have done what he's done on his own, the reality is, no one can level the playing field he met his entire career, either.

While Bonds* is stuck at 754 home runs, A-Rod is sitting on 499 homers and Tom Glavine is at 299 career wins. Wouldn't it be cool if they all reached their milestones on the same day?

Glavine's next start is Sunday...

I guess I am mostly sick of everyone piling on Bonds because they act like his stats came from an alternate universe where he was the only person juiced during all the suspect years, so he was the only person to benefit, not to mention having to bat off juiced pitchers. But it's soooo trendy to pile on him without end.

I mean, the only player to get caught this year, Neifi Perez, should help you see how widespread it surely was when there was no testing at all. So, yeah, Bonds is filthy, but he's no worse than most of his major contemporaries.

And a tip of the cap to Alex Rodriguez, who hit his 500th home run today. Let's see how long it takes him to break Bonds' record (oh, and by the way Alex, can you at least pretend to look like you're enjoying yourself?).

Anytime now he'll be breaking the record.
