What kind of team is it that starts with a TEN-RUN LEAD and blows the game?

YEA, Mariners!!

I remember a game several years ago between the Pirates and Phillies. The road team (Pittsburgh, IIRC) had a ten-run lead and one of their TV announcers said, "If we lose this game, I'll walk home." Well, they did, and he did, three months later...as a charity fund-raiser sponsored by the staion.

P.S.: The Rays maintained their 3-game lead in the AL East by drawing a walk-off walk in the 10th to sweep the Tigers.

Philly fan here, I remember that.  I also remember a time when I was in college, 1991 or 1992, when we were losing 7-9 runs late in a game against the Dodgers and we came back to win, and Tommy Lasorda (manager then) freaked out and started throwing stuff around the dugout when we took the lead.

Today we lost to the Marlins and the Mets, already playing 11 more games than us vs the patsy NL West, are starting a series against the San Diego Puff Pastry, and of course won.

So in the near time the race might appear closer than it is.

The Rays scored 6 runs with no outs in the bottom of the ninth (including a three-run walk-off homer by Carlos Peña) to beat Cleveland 10-7 in this afternoon's getaway rubber game. Now, off to Seattle to face the lowly Mariners.

Well, PregNut, they must have a lot of performance anxiety. I mean, if they can't sweep the Mariners, it's all over for them?

If they can't at least get a split it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

Nothing good about the Phils -- shut out by the Pirates...

But the Skankees wheeled out Ian Kennedy again and he was utterly owned (0-4), and they lost.  So I'll take that as my joy from baseball tonight.

Yankees got hammered by the Angels today - 11-3. Mets knocked off the Marlins for the second straight game, pushing them further down the standings.

Is it time to start thinking about MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year candidates?

Phils, Fish and Mets all lost, so nothing changes.  Skankees also lost.

Want overall votes?  It'll still take a bit of time, I'll hold off.

The Rays won their franchise-record 71st game of the season Sunday in Seattle, but had to place LF Carl Crawford and 3B Evan Longoria on the DL. They hope to have Longoria back in 3 weeks, but Crawford may be out for the season.

If they're lucky, they've built up a big enough lead over Boston so it won't matter too much.

Skankees lost today....to the Royals.     Was the 2nd time in a row Rivera was scored upon and the 3rd time in a row his pitching lead to a loss.

Phils played the Padres......Jamie Moyer vs Greg Maddux.  They played together for the 1986-88 Cubs.  In fact, Maddux's first appearance was in relief of Moyer's 12th start.

But today Maddux left one where Pat Burrell could hit it and that was the difference.  Jamie Moyer threw 7 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 walks, and won his 11th.  He's en fuego.  Never saw a 45 year old do so well that wasn't a knuckleballer or a freak of nature (Nolan Ryan).

So we're still 1 behind the Mets, but overall all seems well.
