This is rich, and you'll love it. I'm a freelance writer. I'm in the IMDB -- on paper, I'm successful -- but my previous markets are nearly all gone. I've applied for maybe 50 conventional jobs this last year, with no result. Because I'm self-employed, I cannot collect unemployment.
Without going into details, I'm trying to get Social Security disability benefits. I have a good case, according to my medical folks. But I was denied. I met yesterday with a lawyer to challenge the ruling. (The bastard law firm will take 25% of my benefits if successful, and the government will keep another 25% for God knows what reason.) She informs me that if I make more than $1000 in any month, I cannot collect benefits. The feds look at monthly gross, not yearly net.
I made $7,000 last year. (Thank God for my sterling credit rating, because I'm living on credit cards.) Once in awhile I make a big sale, and it's $1000 or more. For the government, that automatically rules me out.
Worse, my lawyer tells me that my case may not come up for two or three years. Tell me how I should live this way for that long? I could barely **82** last night.
