Alright fellas, as you can see I'm very new here. I have been reading this particular thread for some time, as I'm very fond of Joyce. I haven't told anyone the following story, because I didn't really know how to present it without divulging too much and breaking a promise. The following is essentially true, but not the complete story.
The last point in time most of us had seen Joyce in public was at the 2001 Glamourcon, wearing the sleeveless t-shirt with an American flag design. Well, that's not the last time I saw her. 6 years ago I was hired by a book author friend, who I'll call Robert, to videotape a live appearance and book signing, not at a book store, but in the men's section of a department store in west Los Angeles! It made sense given the book's comedic topic of how to fix up your man (not those exact words, but close). Robert talked for some 20 minutes, and at the end he invited audience members to share some of their own stories. From my location in the room I mostly saw the backs of heads, and of course, my attention was mostly fixed on the author in the small video monitor. I could hear some of the audience members stories, but not all of them. Robert would then respond to what they'd say. It sounded like everyone had a good time.
At the end, Robert took his position at a table next to me some 12 feet away where he signed books. As I busied myself packing up the camera gear, I could just make out a conversation he was having with a woman concerned about the videotaping and what was it going to be used for. I thought I recognized her voice. That's when I looked up and saw Joyce! If a jaw could hit the floor, mine did. I immediately put two and two together. While I didn't specifically see or hear her during the taping (again, because of the small monitor), she must have participated. He assured her it was only going to be used for his own study purposes, in preparation for a series of live appearances. That's also what he told me, so I knew he was being truthful. She really didn't have anything to be concerned about.
As she turned away to leave, I approached her to say hello and reassure her that the tape would not be used beyond what Robert told her. I figured that hearing it from me, someone she'd met on friendly terms a few times, might help. I also wanted to say hello! Well, when I said "Hi Joyce!" she turned and smiled, but then as she recognized me she became visibly startled. I mean really, really startled. It was obvious that being recognized out in public is one of her worst fears. I assured her what Robert said was true and that I also wouldn't allow the tape to be misused. I can't say it was a very pleasant reunion given the awkwardness, but I was still happy to see her after all that time.
Since I had possession of the tape, when I got home I watched through that audience participation section to see what if anything of Joyce I might have captured. Sure enough, there she was right in front, so the back of her head was there the whole time. She also participated with a story, but I couldn't make out much of it because she wasn't on mic. Then as other women talked, she'd turn around to listen to them, so her face was clearly visible.
So that's it, an official update, even if 6 years past. She looked wonderful, as the attached picture of video stills confirms.
